Getting started
What is Taqwa?
Taqwa is an offline-first Islamic app that brings together accurate prayer times, a full Mushaf with offline Qur'an study (tafsir, i'rab, qiraat, asbab al-nuzul, word meanings, tajweed), du'as and azkar, a tasbeeh counter, qibla compass, memorization (hifz), a Zakat calculator, Qiyam al-Layl and Ramadan tools, home-screen widgets, an Apple Watch app, and more β in one calm, focused place.
Is Taqwa free? Are there ads?
Yes, Taqwa is completely free, with no ads and no tracking. It was built as a sadaqah jariyah.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no account. Your data stays on your device.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The Mushaf, prayer-time calculation, du'as, dhikr, qibla, memorization, and the scholarly study content are bundled in the app and work without an internet connection. A connection is only needed for optional extras like reciter audio streaming, translations download, radio/TV, and live currency/gold rates in the Zakat calculator.
Which languages are supported?
The interface is available in English, Arabic, Urdu, and Hindi, with full right-to-left support for Arabic and Urdu.
Prayer times & notifications
How are prayer times calculated?
Prayer times are computed entirely on your device using well-established astronomical formulas. You can choose your calculation method (Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura, Egyptian, ISNA, Karachi, Gulf, and more), your Asr method (Standard/Hanafi), and apply per-prayer minute adjustments.
A prayer time looks slightly off. How do I fix it?
Open Prayer Settings and: (1) confirm your location is correct, (2) choose the calculation method your local mosque uses, and (3) use the per-prayer minute offsets to match your local timetable. Always verify with your local mosque for time-sensitive worship.
Why does Taqwa need my location? Is it shared?
Your location is used to calculate prayer times and the qibla direction (both computed on your device), and to find mosques near you. Your location is never sent to us. Your approximate coordinates are sent only to OpenStreetMap β to display your city name and to list nearby mosques β and you can set your location manually instead.
My adhan or notifications aren't showing.
Make sure notifications are enabled for Taqwa in your device Settings, that the prayers you want are toggled on, and that Focus/Do-Not-Disturb isn't silencing them. On Android, also check that battery optimization isn't restricting the app in the background.
Can I use my own adhan sound?
Yes β you can choose between built-in muezzins, and import a custom adhan (full support on Android; in-app playback on iOS).
Qur'an & study
Can I read the whole Qur'an offline?
Yes. The Mushaf renders authentic Madani pages offline. You can bookmark pages, highlight verses, and resume where you left off.
What is the verse study sheet?
Long-press any verse to open a study sheet with tafsir (Muyassar, Ibn Kathir and more), an English translation, word-by-word meanings, tajweed, full i'rab (grammar), asbab al-nuzul (reasons of revelation), and qiraat (variant readings). The scholarly Arabic content is offline and provided by the Tafsir Center for Qur'anic Studies under CC BY 4.0.
Can I listen to a reciter?
Yes. You can play verse-by-verse audio from 45+ reciters and download surahs for offline listening. Recitation plays continuously from one ayah to the next, and you can use built-in recitation playlists to listen to a set of passages back to back.
Can I share a verse as an image?
Yes. Long-press a verse, choose Share, and pick the range of ayahs; Taqwa renders them as an image styled like the Mushaf page and shares it through your device's share sheet. The image is created on your device.
Can I memorize Qur'an in the app?
Yes. The memorization (hifz) tool uses spaced repetition with tap-to-reveal self-testing, audio help, progress stats, and optional daily reminders.
More features
How does the qibla compass work?
It uses your device's compass and location to point toward the Kaaba. For best accuracy, move your phone in a figure-8 to calibrate, and keep it away from magnets and metal.
Is there a tasbeeh counter, du'as, and azkar?
Yes β a haptic tasbeeh counter with curated dhikr, plus a large collection of du'as and azkar organized by occasion (morning, evening, sleep, travel, and more), with an immersive focus mode.
What is the Qiyam al-Layl companion?
It shows the night window for tahajjud, an optional wake reminder for the last third of the night, step-by-step witr guidance, night du'as, and streak tracking.
How does the Zakat calculator work?
A step-by-step calculator for cash, gold, silver, and other assets, with a nisab check and multi-currency support. Live gold and currency rates are fetched online for accuracy. It is a helpful aid, not a personalized fatwa.
What is the recitation check (tasmeeΚΏ)?
An experimental feature that listens while you recite and follows along on screen. It is in development and may be imperfect; for the most accurate real-time tajweed feedback we also point to dedicated recitation apps.
Are there widgets and an Apple Watch app?
Yes β home-screen and lock-screen widgets (next prayer, countdown, daily ayah, worship tracker), a Live Activity countdown on iOS, and an Apple Watch companion with silent haptic prayer nudges.
Can I find mosques near me?
Yes. The Nearby Mosques screen lists mosques close to you using OpenStreetMap data, with the nearest one and its distance on the Home screen. Only your approximate coordinates are sent (to OpenStreetMap) to find them β nothing is stored. Tapping "Directions" opens your chosen maps app (Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze).
Are there app-icon shortcuts?
Yes. Long-press the Taqwa icon on your Home screen for quick shortcuts to the Qibla, the Mushaf, Prayer times, and the nearest mosque.
Is there a mode for new Muslims?
Yes β a New Muslim track with animated step-by-step wudu and salah, transliteration for non-Arabic speakers, a glossary, and early lessons.
Does Taqwa back up my data?
Your bookmarks, notes, tasbeeh counts, tracking, and memorization progress are stored locally on your device for your privacy. They are not uploaded to any server of ours, so deleting the app removes them.
