Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how the Taqwa mobile application ("Taqwa", "the app", "we", "us") handles information. Taqwa is an offline-first Islamic companion for prayer times, the Qur'an, du'as, qibla, dhikr, memorization, and learning, published by RagabStudio.

The Short Version

1. We Do Not Collect Personal Data

Taqwa has no sign-up and no user accounts. We do not operate analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and we do not maintain a server that stores your information. Because there is no account, we never see your name, email, contacts, or worship activity.

Everything you create in the app — bookmarks, highlights, tasbeeh counts, prayer tracking, worship and memorization (hifz) progress, journal/tadabbur notes, reminders, and preferences — is stored locally on your device (and, where you enable it, synced to your own iCloud/device backup by the operating system, never to us). Deleting the app removes this data.

2. Device Permissions

Taqwa requests only the permissions needed for specific features, and explains each at the moment it is used:

• Location — to calculate accurate prayer times and the qibla direction for where you are. Used only while using the app; you can also set your location manually instead of using GPS.
• Notifications — to remind you of prayer times and azkar. All reminders are scheduled locally on your device — nothing is sent to a server.
• Motion & compass — to point the qibla compass using your device's heading. Used only while the compass is open.
• Microphone & speech — for optional Arabic voice search and the experimental recitation check (tasmeeʿ). Speech is processed by your device's on-device recognition; recordings are not stored or sent to us. Used only when you tap the microphone.
• Photo library — to save and share verse images and greeting cards you create. Used only when you save or share an image.

Prayer-time calculation and the qibla bearing are computed on your device. Your location is never sent to us.

3. Internet Connections (Content Delivery Only)

Taqwa works offline for its core features. To show optional Qur'an content and live data, the app connects directly to trusted third-party services to download content — it does not send them your personal information (with the two disclosed location exceptions below). These connections include:

• Qur'an verses & word-by-word data: api.quran.com, api.qurancdn.com, tanzil.net
• Translations: api.alquran.cloud
• Tafsir (scholarly commentary): api.quran-tafseer.com, tafsir.net, quran.ksu.edu.sa
• Qur'an topic index (Quranpedia): quranpedia.net
• Recitation audio & Qur'an radio: everyayah.com, mp3quran.net, and related CDNs
• Adhkār audio (Hisn al-Muslim): www.hisnmuslim.com
• Mushaf fonts & offline study-data package: cdn.jsdelivr.net, raw.githubusercontent.com
• One-time offline speech-model download (for the experimental tasmeeʿ / tajweed feature): github.com, objects.githubusercontent.com, alphacephei.com
• Currency & gold/silver rates for the Zakat calculator: api.frankfurter.app, open.er-api.com, api.gold-api.com

The two exceptions — your approximate location. In two cases your approximate coordinates are sent to OpenStreetMap to provide a feature; they are not stored by us and not linked to you:

• City name (reverse geocoding): nominatim.openstreetmap.org, to display the name of your city. You can avoid this by setting your location manually.
• Nearby mosques: overpass-api.de, to list mosques close to you when you open that screen.

When you tap "Directions" to a mosque, the destination is handed to whichever maps app you choose (Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze); from that point their own terms and privacy practices apply.

These third-party services have their own privacy practices, which we do not control. Standard technical information (such as an IP address) may be visible to them when your device requests content, as with any internet request.

4. Children's Privacy

Taqwa does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The app contains no ads, no accounts, and no tracking.

5. Data Security & Retention

Because your data stays on your device, its security is governed by your device's own protections (passcode, biometrics, encryption). We retain nothing on our side because we collect nothing. Removing the app removes the data it stored locally.

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. The "Last Updated" date above will reflect the latest version, and material changes will be reflected in the app and on this page.
